SIGNIFICANCE OF FESTIVALS !

Dear Balarishi.,
What do the hindu festivals signify?

Festivals are the icons of a culture.Hindu festivals came into practice with deep meaning and insight. But just because they are age old practices, some people have a tendency to propagate against it.The irony is,as many people criticize age old practices without knowing the intricacies of such festivals intellectuals devote lot of time and resources to analyze and study the concepts and cultural elements behind it.

If we have the aspects of our culture as live as possible, you will get to know how beneficial they are.For instance,Ayudha puja is very much a part of our culture. It signifies the concept that one should respect and worship not only the word he does but also the equipments and instruments which he uses to work.Similarly,Vijayadhasami is the day when Vidhyarambam is done.Knowledge is power and everyone seek knowledge.Even those who debate if God is there are not are in search of knowledge.Worshipping knowledge is a beautiful gesture.

Whichever theme is denoted by a festival,on that given day, your focus will be more on that particular aspect. For instance on Independence day naturally your thoughts are drawn towards your country.Similarly, when you prepare aydha pooja your thought is towards the ways and means of improving your profession in a better way.

Similarly, festivals also pave way forintegration in micro and macro levels.During celebration,a family comes together, greetings are exchanged in the society and the country unites in a celebration.People eat, celebrate and spend time together.

Diwali signifies the killing of Naragasura.Rakshasas are not onlyin the outer world but even inside every one. When the guna of rakshas is done away,it calls for a celebration and that is Diwali.

Diwali celebration catches up in two main expressions. One is bursting crackers and other is lighting lamps. The very word diwali means lamps being lighted in a line.Nowadays crackers and fireworks cause much pollution and lighting lamp is a more significant and safe way of celebrating diwali.Anything bad is seen as darkness and anything good is seen as light.Negativity is darkness and positivity is light.Ignorance is darkness and knowledge is light.I wish you all a happy diwali which leads you from darkness to light."Thama Somaa Jothir gamaya"
